Bluebonnet Book Review

I really liked the book, Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. If you have ever been to a place where you are new and you are in new surroundings, you will definitely enjoy this book! It tells about a young boy from war-torn Sudan by way of a refugee camp who is placed in another home in Minnesota for awhile. He was separated from his mother during all the fighting and his father was killed. He experiences the Minnesota culture in a new and positive way and finds a surprising ‘friend’.
Read the book to find out if he ever finds his mother again because he is very homesick for her.

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
It is a page turner, and a very unpredictable book. The ending was a complete surprise. I would love to read a sequel to this.

Week 9 – Thing 23 Summary of 23 Things

Wow- I learned alot with 23 things! I have my own blog, and I know about many web 2.0 library applications such as podcasting, ebooks, and tagging. The opportunities are endless and powerful. I appreciate del.icio.us and the way it can be an important tool in saving favorite websites. I especially liked the Zoho planner. I think it can really be of help with my organization needs. I also know that my learning has not ended. I will be forever going online to keep my library up to date with integrating new technologies.

Myebook – Tyrone the Horrible

As I was looking around at the World EBook Fair site I was excited to discover a myebook link. There I found a children’s book I can use with my students and I have uploaded it at the beginning of this post. I also used the collections link choosing children’s ebook. There I found 993 titles many of which are classics ranging from fiction/non-fiction to fantasy to nursery rhymes. I was amazed at the size of one which had 80 pages. Many were older literary works such as ‘The Story of the Three Bears’. At the end of the list they had several dictionaries in many languages. Also, as soon as I opened up the World EBook Fair site a You Tube video came on about ebooks from School library.com

Movies Based on Books

I used podcastalley.com and found ABC Book Reviews with Beth and Cari. I thought this was interesting because it is very current. Beth and Cari are reference librarians with Twinsburg Library and they discussed movies such as Where the Wild Things Are, Inkheart, Tale of Despereax, and Time Traveler’s Wife. bethandcari.xml

My school’s theme this year is Wild About Learning, and I plan to show this video to my students at the beginning of the year to get them excited and motivated. I also liked Speak Out for the Library. It features Bette Midler , “Getting Started with del.icio.us” and Rock’n'Roll Library. Another video that was titled Introducing the Book was cute but it was in Norwegian!

Library Thing- The best feature I liked was book recommendations. I am always looking for good books to read when I walk into a bookstore. Now, I can use this resource. I also enjoyed finding the ‘tools’ feature. That was like finding a goldmine of information especially how to put LT on your blog. I found no reviews on my home page for the 5 books I cataloged. Week 8 Thing 18- I think I am going to really like this. It sounds like it will make things easier so I do not have to email documents from my computer at home to my computer at work or save it to my flashdrive. I also like zoho show 2.0 for presentations I make for the library . I took a look at ZoHo Planner and that looks good-I would like to post it to my blog or get reminders through my email. I wonder how that works.
